A 23-year-old woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her involvement in the killings of three tourists who disappeared during a surfing trip in Baja California, Mexico, last year. Ari Gisell admitted in court that her actions set off the events that led to the deaths of Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend, Carter Rhoad, in April 2024. The three men were fatally shot, and their bodies were later found dumped in a well.

According to prosecutors, Gisell had expressed interest in the tires on the surfers’ vehicle, telling her then-boyfriend, Jesús Gerardo, to “bring me a good phone and good tires for my pickup truck.” Authorities say Gerardo and two other men followed the tourists to their campsite, robbed them, and killed them. The cases against the three men are still underway. Two suspects are being held in a maximum-security facility due to alleged links to the Sinaloa cartel, though investigators say the murders themselves are not believed to be connected to organized crime. Prosecutors are seeking sentences of 210 years for each of the men.

Family members delivered emotional statements during the sentencing hearing. The mother of the Australian brothers spoke of shattered futures and overwhelming grief, saying, “We dreamed of seeing them grow older, of having children. That’s all taken now.” Jake, 30, was a doctor visiting Callum, 33, a former Major League Lacrosse player who had moved to the U.S. at age 20. “Our hearts are broken beyond repair,” Debra Robinson told the court. “The silence in our home is deafening… The grief is constant—it lives inside us now.”

Rhoad’s fiancée, Natalie Weirtz, described her loss as devastating. “Carter was the love of my life… My life is now a nightmare,” she said.

Gisell, a single mother, apologized in court, saying in English that she has lost her family because of her actions. “Nothing I can say will compensate you or give you peace,” she said. “I am focused on being a better person, and I am very sorry for your losses.”
