A shocking video showing a mother and her two young children being brutally attacked by a group of kids outside a Chicago elementary school has gone viral, drawing millions of views on X.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called the footage “deeply disturbing” and “gut-wrenching,” expressing outrage over the violence.

The mother, 33-year-old Corshawnda Hatter, said she and her children were cornered while walking home Monday from Orville Bright Elementary School on the city’s South Side. In the video, Hatter is seen trying to shield her 9-year-old son and younger daughter as children hurled abuse, blocked their path, and then threw them to the ground, repeatedly punching and kicking them. At one point, her wig was ripped off, and one attacker can be heard shouting, “Beat his ass!” as her son tried to escape.

“They were literally waiting along the way we walked home, just to jump all of us,” Hatter told WGN-TV outside the school on Tuesday. “They followed us all the way there, hit my son first, dragged me in the grass, and pulled my baby’s hair,” she added.

Hatter and her son were taken to Trinity Hospital in serious condition. It is unclear if the younger daughter required medical attention.

Chicago police said the incident is under investigation and that no arrests had been made as of Wednesday morning. Hatter said her son had been bullied at the school for more than two years, but she claims the administration failed to protect him, according to Fox 32.

On Tuesday, Hatter met with school administrators and city leaders, saying, “I’m trying to get justice for my son.”

Local parents described the troubling behavior as part of a larger pattern. “This is not the first time the kids have done this,” one parent told CBS News. “Just talk around the streets that these kids have pretty much been raising themselves, and they have not been held accountable. They have vandalized cars. They have harassed adults and children.”

Mayor Johnson emphasized that such violence cannot be tolerated. “I am deeply disturbed to see the video of young people attacking a mother and her child on the Far South Side yesterday afternoon. That type of behavior is unacceptable in our city, and we must not normalize that kind of senseless violence,” he said.

Chicago Public Schools called the attack “horrifying” and said it is supporting the Hatter family. The district has not yet commented on whether any students involved have faced disciplinary action.
