Masked youth causing hundreds of dollars in damage as part of TikTok challenge

Elk Grove, Calif. — Masked teenagers in California have caused hundreds of dollars in property damage while participating in a troubling TikTok trend that has resurfaced among local youth.
The “Door Kick Challenge” involves pranksters rushing up to a home and forcefully kicking the front door before fleeing. Elk Grove, a community about 15 miles south of Sacramento, has reported at least eight such incidents, according to the Elk Grove Police Department.
One door sustained $900 in damage, CBS News Sacramento reported. Under California law, property damage exceeding $400 can be classified as felony vandalism, with repairs above $950 potentially leading to felony charges and parents being held financially responsible.
Police released video showing two of the teens running up to a home before kicking the front door. On Friday, two 13-year-olds were arrested and charged with causing more than $680 in damage. Earlier in November, three other juveniles were arrested in connection with similar pranks, though their names and ages were not disclosed.
Residents are urging teens to reconsider these stunts, warning that the pranks could turn deadly if a homeowner reacts violently. Ronnie Monroe, whose home was targeted twice in September, described a frightening encounter that left his granddaughter panicked.
“The granddaughter came flying in and she was scared, all panicky, which I can understand,” Monroe said.
In one instance, Monroe and his family chased the teens to a neighbor’s home, witnessing them continue their door-kicking spree. “It sounds like someone is kicking down your door to try and hurt your family,” Elk Grove Police Sergeant Jason Jiminez said.
Police say the teens often evade capture by fleeing on motorized bikes. “You can’t catch them if you can’t see them,” Monroe noted.
Authorities are urging parents to address their children’s behavior before incidents escalate. “While trends like this may seem like harmless fun, they can have serious consequences,” police wrote in a social media post. “Talking with your children about safety, respect for others’ property, and making good choices helps keep everyone safe and build a stronger community.”
