Harrowing footage captured the moment a black bear chased an 11-year-old boy into a Family Dollar store in Markleysburg, Pennsylvania, according to reports.
Cole Frazee had gone to check on his father while shopping when he noticed a black bear staring at him, CBS Pittsburgh reported. Before he could react, the massive animal lunged, chasing him straight into the store.
“When it ran after me, I turned around, ran in the store, and screamed. It was like a foot and a half away from me,” Frazee recalled. “I thought, ‘I’m probably going to get eaten by a bear.’ I took a left, and the bear went straight.”
Frazee sprinted through the aisles and ran toward the cashier, the only other person in the store. Together, they jumped onto the counter and bolted out the doors as soon as the bear turned away.
“She grabbed her coat, keys, and phone, and we ran out,” Frazee said. “Then we all got in the car.”
Surveillance footage obtained by CBS Pittsburgh shows the bear leaping over the front counter moments after the pair fled, towering over stocked shelves before landing back on the floor.
The bear lingered inside the store for about 10 minutes before finding its way outside. “I was relieved,” Frazee said. “It was definitely a crazy experience.”
According to the National Wildlife Federation, large male black bears can weigh up to 600 pounds, while females rarely exceed 200 pounds. The Pennsylvania Game Commission noted that bears actively search for food this time of year, increasing the likelihood of unexpected and potentially dangerous encounters.
