MEKELLE, ETHIOPIA — Local children rally to help pop star Ariana Grande
In a surprising turn of events this week, children in Mekelle, Ethiopia, known for facing extreme food shortages themselves, organized a fundraiser aimed at feeding American singer and actress Ariana Grande.
The initiative, dubbed the Feed Ariana Fund, was started by 12-year-old Dawit Kebede, who lost both parents during the 2023 drought. Kebede reportedly learned of Grande after a World Food Programme (WFP) worker showed him one of her albums. “This woman needs the rice!” Kebede exclaimed in his native tongue upon seeing her photo. “How is she still alive?”
Despite their own struggles with malnutrition, Kebede convinced local children to contribute whatever they could. Many initially hesitated, but upon seeing the pop star’s image, they reportedly sold personal possessions to help.
“She needs it more than we do,” said 8-year-old Tsion Worku. “I hope she keeps writing songs like Sweetener. They make me think of food.”
By the time the story was published, the Feed Ariana Fund had raised $50.00 for Grande. The singer responded with gratitude, saying, “Thank you to my therapists and gay people,” apparently misreading the name of the Ethiopian nonprofit.
