YouTuber Who ‘Pushes the Envelope’ Missing at Sea
A well-known San Diego YouTuber has gone missing off the coast of Baja California, launching a large-scale search involving Mexican authorities, volunteer boaters, and the US Coast Guard. Mikey Rijavec, an angler and content creator, was last heard from on Tuesday when he issued a mayday call reporting engine trouble while fishing alone roughly 8 miles offshore, according to NBC News. The distress call suddenly went silent, and no one has been able to reach him since.
His 14-foot skiff was later discovered drifting about 5 miles from land, but the vessel’s small 6-horsepower outboard engine had vanished. Friends and fellow fishermen, including podcaster Phil Friedman, described Rijavec as a daring outdoorsman known for taking bold risks. “What could have happened? Oh my God, it’s endless,” Friedman said, noting possibilities ranging from mechanical failure to a dangerous encounter at sea.
The disappearance has shaken the Ocean Beach community, where neighbors say Rijavec is known for his love of fishing and his friendly personality. Some pointed to the region’s recent rough weather, while others expressed heartbreak over the uncertainty. The US Coast Guard initially coordinated the search on Tuesday but told NBC 7 that the operation is now being led by Mexican officials. Friedman and other supporters remain hopeful, believing Rijavec could have made it to shore or is still afloat, potentially aided by a survival suit he often used on fishing trips.
