A newly built 758-meter bridge in China’s Sichuan province collapsed into a river on Tuesday after landslides swept down the mountainside above it, according to local reports. Authorities say no injuries or deaths have been reported.

Officials in Maerkang had closed the Hongqi Bridge on National Highway 317 a day earlier after inspectors discovered cracks on nearby slopes and road surfaces. Conditions worsened Tuesday, causing the bridge’s approach span and roadbed to give way. Videos shared widely on Chinese social media show the bridge deck breaking apart and plunging into the water below.

The bridge—part of a major route connecting China’s interior to Tibet—had only recently been completed earlier this year, according to contractor materials cited by Reuters. State media said the road closure order issued Monday likely prevented casualties, as traffic had already been halted before the collapse.

Authorities blamed the disaster on landslides caused by ongoing mountain deformation and said detours have been established while experts investigate the site. Officials have not given an estimate for when the route will reopen.

China has faced growing public concern over infrastructure safety after several high-profile bridge failures since 2024, leading to nationwide inspections and disciplinary actions in response to deadly collapses elsewhere.
