A Las Vegas man who says he endured years of sexual abuse at the hands of his mother now faces a troubling possibility: that his younger brother may also be his biological son.

Logan Gifford, 26, has stepped in to care for his 15-year-old brother — the child their mother, Doreene Gifford, gave birth to when Logan was just 11. According to Logan, the teen has disabilities and needs extra support both at home and at school.

Doreene Gifford was convicted in 2015 of attempted sexual and incest assault of a child under 14. Logan says she repeatedly sexually assaulted him starting when he was 10, continuing for seven years. She entered an Alford plea — not admitting guilt but acknowledging prosecutors had enough evidence to convict — and was sentenced to 8 to 20 years in prison when Logan was 17. “Sending her to prison was halfway vindicating since I thought the largest problem of my life was originally dealt with,” Logan told 8 News Now.

After nine years in prison, Doreene Gifford is now a registered sex offender in Nevada. She was released on parole in July 2024 but was arrested again in January 2025 for violating a condition prohibiting victim contact. She currently resides in Massachusetts, according to Logan.

Now, Logan is embroiled in a custody battle over his younger brother, who had been living with their biological father. On his GoFundMe page for legal expenses, Logan wrote, “I believe he might be my son, a haunting possibility tied to the abuse I suffered around the time he was conceived… I feel it is my obligation or duty to him to do this and find out who his biological father really is.”

Earlier this year, Logan filed a paternity petition in Clark County Family Court, requesting a judge approve an advanced DNA test. Standard DNA tests showed that both Logan and his biological father each matched the teen’s DNA at 99.9%, a result that can happen due to shared genetic overlap among siblings.

“The judge offered the option of pursuing more advanced testing, which could help clarify the boy’s parentage,” Logan told reporters. He explained the complexity: “DNA testing between a full sibling and a potential father can be challenging because both may share about 50% of their DNA with the child. Standard paternity markers often overlap, so advanced methods or additional family samples are needed.”

Logan said, “It’s ugly and visceral, but it needed to be done. If it comes back negative, I’m still filing for custody, because it doesn’t change the obligation I have to him now.”
