President Donald Trump addressed speculation that the gold accents in his Oval Office are actually Home Depot plastic painted gold.

Since taking office in January, Trump has enthusiastically promoted his personal mission to bedazzle the White House. In April, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump had hired his “gold guy” to add “custom-made gold finishes to the Oval Office, including gilded carvings for the fireplace mantel and the molding that wraps around the most famous office in the world,” according to administration officials.

The controversy arose when the motifs were noted for their striking resemblance to polyurethane appliques made by Ekena Millwork, which retail for $58.07 at Home Depot.

When Fox News’ Laura Ingraham recently toured the Oval Office, Trump proudly proclaimed, “You can’t imitate gold. There’s no paint that imitates gold.” In a new clip, Ingraham directly asked if the accents were from Home Depot. Trump replied, “No, this is not Home Depot stuff. This is not Home Depot.” The video, captioned on Ingraham’s Facebook page, reads: “In the Oval Office with President Trump and can confirm that it is REAL gold!”

BuzzFeed contacted Ekena Millwork, the company behind the appliques sold at Home Depot and other retailers, back in August. A spokesperson responded, “We work with several design firms in DC that have worked on the White House and believe these could be our onlays.”

Whether it’s genuine gold or high-end polyurethane, the debate over Trump’s golden decor continues.
