A celebrated educator in Charleston, South Carolina, has been suspended after allegedly attempting to hit the father of her child with her car during a violent confrontation in a Walmart parking lot.

Police say Sade Delesia Nacheyle Nelson, 37, who was recognized earlier this year as Teacher of the Year at St. John’s High School, became involved in a heated custody dispute with her child’s father and his girlfriend on October 18.

A one-time “Teacher of the Year” has been suspended from her job after she allegedly tried to mow down the father of her child with her car in a Walmart parking lot.

According to police reports obtained by Live5News and the Daily Mail, witnesses claim Nelson struck the man and his girlfriend and then tried to run him over with her vehicle. The child’s father told officers that while he was reaching into Nelson’s car to pick up his son, she began punching him repeatedly, causing him to fall to the ground. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Nelson driving directly toward the man during the altercation.

Nelson faces several charges, including third-degree assault and battery, domestic violence of a high aggravated nature, and unlawfully placing a child at risk.

In her statement to police, Nelson alleged that it was the child’s father who initiated the violence, claiming he struck her and their son after opening her car door. She said she approached his vehicle to photograph the license plate when he allegedly knocked her to the ground. Video footage reviewed by investigators appears to show both Nelson and the man approaching each other’s vehicles during the dispute.

After the altercation, police say Nelson left the scene with her son before officers arrived, telling authorities later that a friend had agreed to speak to police on her behalf.

A spokesperson for the Charleston County School District, Andy Pruitt, confirmed that Nelson has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

“Because this is a personnel matter and an active investigation, the district cannot provide additional details at this time,” Pruitt said in a statement.
