A transgender individual at the center of a viral confrontation inside a Los Angeles gym has defended their right to use the women’s locker room, saying they were fully covered and unfairly targeted during the incident.

Alexis Black spoke publicly after singer-songwriter Tish Hyman, an openly gay artist, claimed she was expelled from a Beverly Hills gym—formerly a Gold’s Gym location, now operated by EōS Fitness—for confronting a person she said exposed male genitalia in the women’s locker room.

Video of the shouting match quickly spread across social media, drawing national attention. In the clip, Hyman can be heard demanding that the transgender gym-goer leave, accusing them of inappropriate behavior.

Black, however, rejected those claims in comments to TMZ, saying the situation was misrepresented and that she was the one being harassed.

“The truth in the moment is far from what she is purporting it to be,” Black said. “Every time she’s done that, I’ve had women in the locker room comforting me because of how aggressive she was toward me. I know that I’m a woman.”

Black explained that she began hormone therapy earlier this year and has legally changed her name and gender on identification documents. She said she is registered as female with the gym and feels entitled to use the women’s facilities.

“You’re not going to put a trans woman with a trans man just because we’re trans,” she added. “That seems like a whole new envelope of discrimination.”

The incident escalated after Hyman, a 42-year-old Bronx native with nearly 100,000 monthly Spotify listeners, confronted Black in the locker room. In the video, Hyman repeatedly insisted that men should not be allowed in women’s spaces and accused the gym of unfairly revoking her membership after she protested.

“I have every right not to want a man in the restroom when I’m naked,” Hyman shouted. “There are girls naked in there.”

Hyman has since said she and other women complained multiple times about Black’s use of the women’s locker room, claiming their concerns were ignored. She has denied being transphobic.

“I’m a lesbian. I’ve been a lesbian my whole life,” Hyman said in a follow-up video. “I treat people the way I want to be treated. So I’m not transphobic, I’m not homophobic, I’m not racist. But why is it okay for men to be in women’s restrooms? When is the cut-off point?”

Hyman suggested creating separate locker rooms for transgender individuals as a possible solution.

EōS Fitness, which recently took over the location, has not publicly commented on the dispute. Gold’s Gym, the former operator, clarified that it is no longer responsible for the facility’s policies.

“EōS Fitness now operates the location independently and is responsible for all policies, staffing, and member relations,” a Gold’s Gym spokesperson said. “We are committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for every member, consistent with state and local laws.”

The incident has reignited broader debates in California and nationwide over gender identity, privacy, and the rights of both transgender individuals and women in shared public spaces.
