New Oval Office Sign Brings Out the Critics
President Trump’s ongoing renovation of the White House has sparked a new round of criticism from Democrats after a gold-script sign labeling the Oval Office was added to the building’s exterior, according to The Guardian.
Democratic Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta voiced his displeasure on social media, writing, “This sign looks like s—,” and adding that the administration should instead be focused on helping Americans struggling with food insecurity and rising health care costs. Delaware Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester echoed that sentiment, saying, “I wish they would focus on helping struggling Americans, but this isn’t a good sign.”
Newsweek reports that the addition appears to be more of a decal than a permanent fixture—described by The Hill as “pieces of paper adhered to the wall.” The sign is considered a relatively minor change compared to President Trump’s larger renovation efforts, which include plans to replace the East Wing with a grand ballroom.
Still, the gold-lettered signage fits seamlessly with President Trump’s long-standing preference for lavish, gilded décor, a style already evident inside the Oval Office and well known to visitors of Mar-a-Lago.
