Amid growing concerns about partisanship within the judiciary, a Maryland Supreme Court Justice has drawn attention for a politically charged Halloween display outside his home — one that critics say raises questions about judicial impartiality.
Justice Peter Killough, an appointee of Democratic Governor Wes Moore, is under fire after his front yard display featured numerous left-leaning political messages. The display included a series of tombstone-shaped signs bearing slogans such as “Here lies the Constitution,” “RIP Freedom of Speech,” “RIP Due Process,” and “RIP Climate Science.”
Legal experts say the display may be especially problematic given that Justice Killough is currently presiding over a high-profile environmental case. One expert told Fox News that such public displays of political sentiment could “cast doubt on his ability to rule fairly and without bias.”
A spokesperson for the Maryland judiciary told Fox News Digital that the signs belonged to the judge’s wife, offering no further comment.

Former Arizona Supreme Court Justice Andrew Gould criticized the situation, saying that judges must remain above political influence to preserve public trust. “When a judge exhibits personal bias on issues that are directly tied to an active case, it raises serious ethical concerns,” Gould said. “In such circumstances, the proper course would be to recuse oneself.”
Killough’s judicial record has also faced scrutiny in the past. As a circuit court judge in 2022, he came under fire for lenient sentencing in juvenile violence cases — including releasing a 12-year-old who confessed to killing a teenager, placing him on monitored probation instead of detention.

Justice Gould noted that some judges in recent years have increasingly signaled their political views, particularly in opposition to President Trump and his policies. “It’s part of a broader trend,” he said, “where judges are stepping into the political arena instead of maintaining the neutrality their position demands.”
As concerns over judicial impartiality continue to grow, Justice Killough’s Halloween display has become yet another flashpoint in America’s ongoing debate over politics and the courts.
