President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning to Nigeria in a Truth Social post Saturday night, saying the United States could take military action if the African nation does not stop Islamic extremists from killing Christians.

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that no-disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump wrote.

The president added, “I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”

The post came a day after the U.S. State Department placed Nigeria on its “Countries of Particular Concern” list, a designation for nations that fail to protect religious freedom. According to human rights NGO Intersociety, more than 7,000 Christians have been killed in Nigeria during the first 220 days of 2025 alone. Since Boko Haram launched its insurgency in 2009, the group says over 125,000 Christians have been slaughtered and nearly 19,000 churches destroyed.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and largest oil producer, pledged to defend religious freedom in response to the designation. “The Federal Government of Nigeria will continue to defend all citizens, irrespective of race, creed, or religion,” the Nigerian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Friday. “Like America, Nigeria has no option but to celebrate the diversity that is our greatest strength.”

“Nigeria is a God-fearing country where we respect faith, tolerance, diversity, and inclusion, in concurrence with the rules-based international order,” the ministry added.

Earlier this year, Texas Senator Ted Cruz introduced the “Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025,” legislation aimed at protecting Christians and other religious minorities in Nigeria. The bill would impose targeted sanctions on Nigerian officials who facilitate violence against religious minorities or enforce Sharia or blasphemy laws.
