In a new interview with Good Morning America set to air Sunday, Michelle Obama discussed the challenges she and her husband faced as the nation’s first Black First Family.

“You said we were all too aware that as a first Black couple, we couldn’t afford any missteps,” the host asked. “And you also say as a Black woman, I was under a particularly white, hot glare. Did you feel that?”

“For sure,” Obama replied. “You can’t afford to get anything wrong because you didn’t get the—at least until the country came to know us—the same grace that some other families have received.”

Her comments highlight the pressures she says accompanied her family’s historic time in the White House, despite Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential victory by a large margin and his 2012 re-election by a comfortable margin.

Since leaving the White House, the Obamas have built successful careers, including deals with Netflix, launching podcasts, and speaking engagements. Yet Michelle Obama says the scrutiny they faced as a Black family remains with her.

Last month, she spoke about her experiences at Princeton University, saying she sometimes felt her admission was questioned due to her race. “All my scores said I did not belong in Princeton… and people saw my skin color and they said, ‘you are aiming too high,’” she said. She added that while she was proud of her accomplishments, students like her often struggle with the perception that opportunities were granted because of affirmative action.

She concluded by noting the broader challenges many face in life, emphasizing perseverance and understanding that others may face obstacles, too.
