Two cats are safe and back with their owners after Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) firefighters rescued them from a burning apartment in Santa Ana last week.

The fire broke out on October 22, triggering a rapid response from OCFA crews. Body camera footage shows firefighters arriving within minutes, deploying hose lines to knock down the flames, and searching the apartment for anyone trapped inside — including pets.

Inside the smoke-filled home, firefighters found two frightened cats — one orange and one black — and quickly carried them to safety as they meowed in confusion.

Officials said no people were injured, and the fire was contained before it could spread to neighboring units.

The dramatic rescue video, shared widely on social media, highlights the professionalism and urgency of the OCFA team. “Their swift actions not only saved the family pets but also prevented the fire from spreading further and damaging additional homes,” the department said in a statement.

OCFA also used the incident as a reminder for residents to practice fire safety at home — including never leaving cooking unattended, keeping flammable items at least three feet from heat sources, and regularly checking smoke alarms. Families are also urged to create and rehearse a home escape plan.

As of Friday, officials said the two cats are “doing well” and recovering with their relieved owners.
