President Trump said Wednesday that it’s “too bad” he isn’t allowed to seek a third term in office, acknowledging the constitutional restriction while expressing his desire to continue serving the nation.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One as he traveled from Japan to South Korea, President Trump remarked, “If you read it, it’s pretty clear. I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad.”

The president’s comments came a day after House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters that a third term for Trump would be constitutionally impossible, something he said he had personally discussed with the president.

Trump, however, avoided directly characterizing that conversation, leaving some ambiguity about his stance. “Based on what I read, I guess I’m not allowed to run,” he said. “So we’ll see what happens. I would love to do it.”

He added that the Republican Party has “a great group of people” ready to carry the torch, citing Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was traveling with him, and Vice President JD Vance, who met with senators on Capitol Hill earlier in the week.

Pressed on whether he was ruling out any possible path to a third term, Trump demurred. When asked about a theoretical strategy in which he could run as vice president and later assume the presidency, he dismissed it as “too cute.”

“You’d be allowed to do that,” Trump said with a smile, “but I wouldn’t do that.”
