Texas DPS Pursue Human Smuggler After Driver Refuses to Turn Off Vehicle and Speeds Away with Passenger and Three Illegal Aliens (VIDEO)
Texas DPS Arrests Human Smuggler After High-Speed Chase in Maverick County
MAVERICK COUNTY, TX — Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers pursued a human smuggler in a high-speed chase after the driver refused to comply with a traffic stop, authorities say.
Tetja Spears, the driver, allegedly ignored a trooper’s order to turn off her vehicle after the officer suspected marijuana use in the car. Spears reportedly accelerated, nearly dragging the trooper along with the vehicle, and attempted to evade law enforcement, including ignoring a Border Patrol checkpoint in Eagle Pass.
Troopers ultimately used tire-deflating equipment to bring the vehicle to a stop. Spears and a passenger, Pettus Pine, were taken into custody. Spears faces charges of human smuggling and evading arrest, while Pine is charged with human smuggling. Three individuals from Ecuador, discovered in the car without legal documentation, were transferred to Border Patrol custody.

Texas DPS has emphasized its ongoing commitment to combating human smuggling and illegal immigration through Operation Lone Star, launched in 2021 to secure the state’s borders. Officials note that enforcing immigration law is part of broader efforts to protect public safety and uphold constitutional responsibilities.
President Donald Trump, who resumed office in January, has prioritized securing the southern border, and authorities report that illegal crossings are at historically low levels under current federal enforcement policies.
“The rule of law is back,” said a DPS spokesperson, highlighting the state’s proactive approach to border security and public safety.
