A Dallas funeral home worker died Monday after being trapped under a burial vault in a tragic workplace accident.
Dallas Fire-Rescue responded shortly after 2 p.m. to Restland Funeral Home at 13005 Greenville Ave. According to department spokesman Jason Evans, firefighters found a man pinned from the waist down beneath the heavy vault. First responders lifted the vault using a combination of spreaders and airbags—a technique often used to free individuals from vehicle accidents.
The man was transported to a hospital with serious lower-body injuries but was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m. The victim has not been publicly identified.

“We are saddened by the loss of our long-standing valued employee,” Jody Herrington, manager of operations at Restland Funeral Home, told the Daily Caller. “We are cooperating with the authorities to determine the cause. His family and fellow employees need our support, and we ask that everyone give them space and time to grieve.”
Burial vaults, which enclose caskets and coffins, are most commonly made of concrete, though they can also be constructed from plastic or steel.
Dallas Fire-Rescue deployed its Urban Search and Rescue team to assist at the scene. Officials have not yet determined how the vault came to fall and trap the worker, and the investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Restland Funeral Home has not released a formal statement, and Dallas Fire-Rescue said it has no additional information at this time.
