FAIRHOPE, Alabama — A 61-year-old woman was arrested Saturday during an anti-Trump “No Kings” protest in Fairhope after she appeared in public wearing a large costume shaped like male genitalia.
According to a statement from the Fairhope Police Department, officers responded to complaints about an individual dressed “in a phallic costume” near the Baldwin Square Shopping Center. Police said they approached the protester, identified as Jeana Renea Gamble, and instructed her to remove the outfit, calling it “obscene in a public setting.” When Gamble refused, officers restrained and arrested her. She now faces charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Video footage of the incident shared on Bluesky shows officers taking Gamble to the ground as bystanders shouted that she posed no threat.
The group Indivisible Baldwin County, which helped organize the local “No Kings” protest, condemned the arrest, arguing that Gamble was peacefully exercising her right to free expression.
“Ms. Gamble was peacefully expressing her point of view on Saturday,” the organization said in a statement. “Her violent arrest for expressing herself in ways the police found rude is indefensible, morally and legally. Public officials must uphold the First Amendment and the liberty guarantees of both Alabama law and the U.S. Constitution.”
