CLEVELAND — Two children are facing multiple felony charges after a violent attack on a 5-year-old girl in Cleveland, Ohio, last month, authorities say.
The New York Times reported Thursday that the charges include attempted murder, four counts of sexual assault, two counts of felonious assault, strangulation, and kidnapping.
The victim’s mother, Antavia Kennibrew, told WOIO that she dropped her daughter off at a relative’s home on Sept. 13, believing the child would be safe. Shortly afterward, the young girl left the home and was attacked by a group of children in a nearby wooded area.
Kennibrew said she rushed to the scene after learning what had happened and found Emergency Medical Services attending to her daughter, who was unresponsive at the time.
Describing the aftermath of the attack, Kennibrew told Cleveland 19, “What I saw was unbelievable. My daughter was not my daughter. Her hair was scalped from her head. She had bruises and blood all over her body. Her eyes were filled with blood, and her lips and mouth were covered in blood. Her nails had debris and dirt stuck in them.”
The mother said the trauma has left her daughter struggling with behavioral issues. “She is mentally not OK,” Kennibrew said. “Me not getting justice for my daughter makes me feel like I failed her. I cannot sleep. I can barely eat. I keep repeatedly seeing images of my baby in that field.”
Kennibrew urged the public to take the case seriously. “She is only five, and these horrific things have happened to her. Please help. Please look at this as if it were your own child. This is not gossip. This is not a funny matter. This is not something to ignore.”
Cleveland police say the investigation is ongoing.
