WASHINGTON — President Trump commuted the prison sentence of former GOP Rep. George Santos on Friday, citing alleged mistreatment by the Bureau of Prisons and comparing Santos’ offenses to the past statements of Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.).
Santos, 36, had been sentenced to seven years in prison on April 25 after pleading guilty to federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. He reported to FCI Fairton in Fairfield Township, NJ, on July 25.
Since his incarceration, Santos told The South Shore Press about harsh conditions, including “fluorescent yellow … state-issued polyester” jumpsuits, mold, and broken air-conditioning units at the facility.
Santos admitted in August 2024 to defrauding donors to his 2022 House campaign and using the names of friends, family, and others to inflate the number of contributors.

On Truth Social, President Trump said, “George Santos was somewhat of a ‘rogue,’ but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison. I started to think about George when the subject of Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal came up again.”
Trump criticized Blumenthal for falsely claiming to have served in Vietnam, calling the senator’s statements “far worse than what George Santos did,” while praising Santos for consistently voting Republican.
During his guilty plea, Santos admitted that he and campaign treasurer Nancy Marks, who also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud, had submitted false donor information to federal regulators. Funds obtained through the scheme were reportedly spent on OnlyFans subscriptions, Botox, and spa treatments.
Santos also lied about his personal and professional background, claiming he graduated from New York University and Baruch College, worked at Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, and had Jewish heritage. Santos later clarified he is Catholic, explaining that he had referenced his maternal family’s Jewish background as “Jew-ish.”

These revelations led to his expulsion from Congress in December 2023, making him only the sixth member of the House of Representatives to be expelled while in office.
Blumenthal, for his part, admitted in 2008 that he had overstated his Vietnam War service but later clarified that he had served in the Marine Corps Reserves during that period without being deployed. He has publicly expressed regret for the inaccuracies.
Representatives for the Bureau of Prisons did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and Santos’ release date has not been announced.
“George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.Getty Images
