“Operation Lightning Bug” Leads to Rescue of More Than 30 Children from Trafficking in Texas

Child trafficking has remained a growing crisis across the United States for years, and after four years of open-border policies under the Biden regime, the number of exploited and missing children has reached alarming levels.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of federal and local law enforcement, more than 30 missing children were recently rescued from trafficking operations in Texas during a joint law enforcement mission known as Operation Lightning Bug.

The large-scale effort was organized by the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) in Texas, in collaboration with the San Antonio Police Department and other regional partners. The goal was to locate missing and at-risk children, identify potential trafficking networks, and provide recovery and rehabilitation support for victims.

According to Fox News, the mission led to multiple arrests, felony warrants, and several new investigations. Law enforcement teams from the Marshals’ offices in San Antonio, Del Rio, Midland, and Pecos worked alongside San Antonio Police Department’s Missing Persons Unit, Special Victims Unit, and Street Crimes Unit. Together, they used local and national databases to track juveniles in danger and coordinate rescue efforts across the state.

The results were significant:

  • 30 missing children located

  • 6 victims of sex trafficking rescued and referred for specialized support services

  • 9 felony warrants executed

  • 3 arrests for harboring runaways

  • 5 new child trafficking investigations launched

  • Over 120 children voluntarily returned home

Officers with the Special Victims Unit interviewed each recovered child to determine the level of victimization and to coordinate long-term care placements through agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), ensuring their safety and stability.

U.S. Marshal Susan Pamerleau underscored the agency’s commitment to protecting vulnerable youth, saying:

“The safety of our children is the safety of our communities, and justice demands that we protect those who cannot protect themselves. Through Operation Lightning Bug, we reaffirm our promise to safeguard the most vulnerable and strengthen the safety of our communities.”

The U.S. Marshals have legal authority under the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 to recover endangered or missing children, a mission they continue to prioritize nationwide.

Kirsta Leeberg-Melton, CEO of the Institute to Combat Trafficking, told Fox News Digital that both Texas and the nation have long faced the devastating effects of child exploitation. She emphasized that traffickers often target children from unstable homes — those lacking food security, housing, or strong family support — and increasingly use digital technology to recruit and control their victims.

Since taking office, President Trump has made combatting human trafficking and securing the border a top priority, implementing tougher measures to dismantle trafficking networks and prevent cross-border exploitation. One of his first executive actions was to seal the border and strengthen enforcement protocols to protect American children from these crimes.
