CNN’s Abby Phillip surprised viewers this week when she agreed with Donald Trump Jr. that President Barack Obama should have mentioned President Donald Trump in his recent post about the Middle East peace deal.

The surprise came not from Obama’s words, but from who was calling him out. CNN and Phillip are not exactly known for offering praise or defense of President Trump — which made her comments stand out even more.

Obama’s tweet addressed the end of conflict between Israel and Hamas but made no mention of the leader who brokered the deal. He wrote:

“After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Israeli families and the people of Gaza, we should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight; that those hostages still being held will be reunited with their families; and that vital aid can start reaching those inside Gaza whose lives have been shattered. More than that, though, it now falls on Israelis and Palestinians, with the support of the U.S. and the entire world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza – and to commit to a process that, by recognizing the common humanity and basic rights of both peoples, can achieve a lasting peace.”

Many observers noted that Obama avoided naming President Trump, even though his administration successfully negotiated the peace deal that brought the violence to an end.

During CNN’s Table for Five on Saturday, Phillip acknowledged that omission.

“Honestly, it’s not unfair to say, if President Obama is going to write a whole post about a peace deal, maybe he should acknowledge the president who brokered it,” she said.

Her candid remark drew attention from both sides of the political aisle — with conservatives noting the rare moment of agreement from a CNN anchor, and others surprised by her willingness to say what many were thinking.
