Herschel Walker, best known for his NFL career and a recent Senate run, is entering a new arena: diplomacy. On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate confirmed Walker as ambassador to the Bahamas, ending a nearly 15-year stretch without a U.S. envoy in Nassau. Reuters notes that this long vacancy had left the Bahamas among a small group of countries without an American ambassador for more than a decade.
Walker’s confirmation came during a fast-moving 51-47 vote approving over 100 nominees, following a Senate Republican rules change aimed at accelerating President Trump’s appointments, CBS News reports. NBC News adds that the ambassadorship has been vacant since 2011, when Obama appointee Nicole Avant left. President Obama later nominated White House attorney Cassandra Butts in 2014, but her nomination stalled in the Senate; she was renominated in 2015 and passed away before confirmation.
Selected by President Trump in December, Walker brings a high profile but limited traditional diplomatic experience. Still, Wendall Jones, the Bahamian ambassador to the U.S., welcomed the appointment, highlighting the islands’ hospitality and expressing hope that Walker could strengthen ties and advance shared priorities.
Walker assumes the post amid growing strategic competition in the region. China has invested heavily in the Bahamas, funding projects ranging from a deepwater port to tourism developments and a new hospital. At his confirmation hearing, Walker and other U.S. officials flagged these moves as security concerns, emphasizing the need to protect U.S. interests and influence in the Caribbean.
