A Mormon church in western Sydney was severely damaged by fire in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hebersham at around 3 a.m. following reports of a large blaze. Video footage captured flames towering high above the building, visible from the street and nearby homes.

Inspector Steve Perkins from Fire and Rescue NSW said multiple areas of the complex were alight. “We found the administration side of this building well-alight,” he said.

Around 120 personnel were involved in tackling the fire, and their efforts were credited with preventing the flames from spreading to key areas of the church. “They did a lot of great work to try and cut the fire off from progressing into the main auditorium and chapel area of the church, and they were successful in that,” Inspector Perkins added. “We were able to save a good portion of the building.”

No one was inside the church at the time, and all church members have been accounted for. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
