A Missouri man camping at Sam’s Throne Campground in Arkansas was found dead last week in what authorities suspect was a rare fatal bear attack. The 60-year-old, whose name has not been released, was discovered several yards from his campsite after his son reported him missing. Deputies said the area showed clear signs of a struggle, including drag marks leading into the woods, ABC News reports. Earlier in the week, the man had posted photos of a bear in his camp. Authorities say his injuries are consistent with a bear attack, KARK reports.

Sheriff Glenn Wheeler confirmed that the Arkansas State Crime Lab has classified the death as an “animal mauling” and ruled it accidental. Investigators believe a bear is responsible, though DNA testing is underway to confirm the species. Officials suspect a juvenile male bear, likely separated from its mother earlier this year, was involved. Wheeler emphasized this detail to dispel rumors of a large adult bear being responsible.

Search efforts for the animal are ongoing, with multiple local and federal agencies assisting. The campground and surrounding areas remain closed as a precaution.

Authorities are urging residents and campers to follow bear safety guidelines, including keeping food away from sleeping areas and avoiding any contact with bears, regardless of size. Wheeler described the attack as “highly unusual” but warned that predatory behavior in bears can persist once it begins.
