Nation’s First ‘Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway’
The Lake County Commission in Florida unanimously approved the designation of the Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway on September 23, marking what may be the first officially recognized tribute of its kind in the country. The commemorative sign was installed just days after the vote.
According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, former Florida legislator Anthony Sabatini led the effort, posting on social media: “IT’S OFFICIAL — Our Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway signs are up!” Sabatini added, “Lake County, FL is now the first local government in the nation to name a road after the great Charlie Kirk — every city & county in America should follow our lead.” The new designation applies to Schofield Road, which connects Lake County to Orange County.
The vote followed a contentious debate that reportedly lasted two and a half hours, with discussions at times growing heated.
Efforts to rename other roads in honor of Kirk across Florida—in places such as Clearwater, Hernando County, Melbourne, Miami-Dade County, Pensacola, and St. Lucie County—have either been denied or are still pending approval. Conservative supporters have sought to commemorate Kirk’s life and achievements in various ways, but these initiatives have not always been met with approval.
Following Kirk’s public assassination on September 10, President Donald Trump ordered American flags flown at half-staff and announced that Kirk would posthumously receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
Vigils were held nationwide, in cities and small towns alike. A memorial service in Glendale, Arizona, was reported by Homeland Security to have drawn nearly 100,000 attendees.

Kirk, who frequently visited local universities in Florida, left a lasting impression on academic communities. Jamie Miller, vice president of communications and chief marketing officer at New College of Florida in Sarasota, said the school plans to commission a statue of Kirk on campus “as a commitment by New College to defend and fight for free speech and civil discourse in American life.”
As the Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway stands in Lake County, it symbolizes more than just a roadway—it represents a path for ideas, debate, and public engagement, reflecting the impact of Kirk’s work.
