Police in Brunswick, Maine, rescued a hunter who became trapped in quicksand-like mud while retrieving ducks near Wharton’s Point on Maquoit Bay.
Authorities said the incident happened Wednesday afternoon, when the 31-year-old man ventured onto the bay’s mud flats. As he walked across, he suddenly began to sink and found himself trapped up to his waist. Attempts to free himself only made him sink deeper.
The hunter managed to call 911, and Brunswick officers responded by boat. Two officers worked together to break the suction and pull him free. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation due to prolonged exposure to cold ocean water.
Police issued a warning after the rescue, noting that coastal mud flats can be unstable and often conceal hidden “honey pots” — patches of quicksand-like mud that are not visible until someone steps into them. “The more a person moves, the deeper they become,” the department said.
Along with saving the hunter, officers also retrieved the ducks he had shot before getting stuck.
