Madonna has given her first interview in nearly a decade, revealing deeply personal struggles and how she overcame them. Speaking with Jay Shetty on Monday’s episode of his On Purpose podcast, the pop icon shared that she once contemplated taking her own life during one of the most difficult periods of her life.
The “Like A Virgin” singer said her faith has been a guiding force through both her public and private challenges. Despite her long-standing study of Kabbalah, Madonna explained she still faced intense emotional battles — especially during her 2016 custody dispute with ex-husband Guy Ritchie over their son Rocco.

“There were moments in my life where I wanted to cut my arms off,” she said, recalling the pain. “I actually contemplated suicide. That probably sounds really weird coming from me because I’m not emo, but I was like, I can’t take this pain anymore. Even though my marriage didn’t work out … someone trying to take my child away from me, it was like, they might as well just kill me. That’s what I was thinking.”
Madonna revealed she was on tour while the custody battle raged. “I would just be lying on the floor of my dressing room, sobbing,” she remembered. “I really thought it was the end of the world. I couldn’t take it. But thank God, I don’t feel that way anymore.”

She added that the experience taught her powerful lessons, and today she maintains a strong relationship with her son. “At the end of the day, I needed to learn some lessons. I’m now really good friends with my son,” she said.
Madonna credited her faith for helping her through the ordeal. “As soon as you understand that what’s happening to you is a challenge that you are karmically meant to experience and learn from and evolve to a higher level of consciousness, then you can look at that event, that experience, as a lesson, not punishment,” she explained.
