Here We Go: Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker Accuses President Trump of Having Dementia

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker (D) escalated his attacks on President Donald Trump Tuesday, accusing the president of having dementia and even calling for the 25th Amendment to be invoked.

The outburst came after President Trump announced plans to send federal agents and a small contingent of National Guard troops into Chicago to help curb the city’s spiraling crime and illegal immigration problems, as well as to protect ICE agents and facilities.

Speaking at a food insecurity event alongside Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D), Pritzker reacted angrily to Trump’s remarks earlier in the day at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. During a meeting with military leaders, Trump had suggested that crime-plagued cities like Chicago could be used as a training ground for the National Guard.

Pritzker blasted the idea and went further, telling reporters:

“It appears that Donald Trump not only has dementia set in, but he’s copying tactics of Vladimir Putin. Sending troops into cities, thinking that that’s some sort of proving ground for war or that indeed there’s some sort of internal war going on in the United States is just frankly inane, and I’m concerned for his health.”

He later doubled down, insisting:

“There is something genuinely wrong with this man and the 25th Amendment ought to be invoked.”

Section Four of the 25th Amendment lays out the process for removing a sitting president deemed unable to perform his duties, but invoking it would require the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet to act in concert—something highly unlikely given Trump’s strong backing within his administration.

Pritzker’s attack echoed recent comments by Bruce Springsteen, who told TIME magazine that President Trump embodies “what the 25th Amendment and impeachment were for.” Springsteen, a longtime Trump critic, claimed Trump “doesn’t care about anybody but himself and the multibillionaires who stood behind him on Inauguration Day.”

The remarks highlight a growing pattern among Trump’s critics, who often resort to personal insults or calls for drastic measures, even as Trump continues to push federal action in cities like Chicago where violent crime remains a serious concern.
