Roughly 58 million pounds of corn dogs and other sausage-on-a-stick products are being recalled across the United States after reports that pieces of wood may be embedded in the batter. Several consumers have already reported injuries linked to the issue.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Saturday that the recall includes certain “State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick” and “Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick” products manufactured by Hillshire Brands, a subsidiary of Tyson Foods.

The contamination was uncovered after Hillshire received multiple complaints from customers. At least five of those complaints involved injuries, according to FSIS. Tyson explained in a statement that a “limited number” of items contained small fragments of wooden sticks in the batter, prompting the company to launch the recall.

The recalled products were produced between March 17 and this past Friday at a single Tyson facility in Haltom City, Texas.

FSIS warned that some of the affected products could still be in homes, school cafeterias, or even Defense Department facilities. The items were widely distributed nationwide, both online and through major retailers.

Consumers are urged to either dispose of the recalled goods or return them to the place of purchase. To confirm whether a product is included in the recall, shoppers should check the product name, use-by date, and other identifying details listed by FSIS and Tyson. Packaging should also show the establishment number “EST-582” or “P-894.”
