A Mississippi man who was arrested twice in less than a month on alcohol-related charges has died in custody, local authorities confirmed.

Felix Marquez Bartolo was found unresponsive in his cell around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Magee Police Chief Denis Borges. Officials said Bartolo was being housed alone at the time, and officers immediately followed emergency procedures.

Investigators with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation have been called in to review the circumstances. Police say no foul play is suspected.

Bartolo’s death came just two days after his most recent arrest, where he was charged with driving under the influence, failing to obey traffic signals, a seatbelt violation, and driving without a valid license or proof of insurance.

This was not his first run-in with local officers. On August 22, Bartolo allegedly showed up intoxicated at the Magee Police Department to post bond for a friend arrested on DUI charges the night before. He was taken into custody himself and charged with public intoxication.

In both arrests, mugshots released by police appeared to show Bartolo wearing the same clothes.

Following news of his death, comments under the department’s announcement reflected both sympathy and concern. Some remembered him as kind and friendly, while others questioned whether it was safe to detain someone struggling with alcoholism in isolation.

A representative for the Magee Police Department was not immediately available for further comment.
