Multiple fatalities have been reported at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints congregation in Michigan after an unidentified gunman opened fire, according to local media. Videos from the scene show the church engulfed in flames, with reports indicating the roof is beginning to collapse.

The devastating incident comes just one day after the passing of Russell M. Nelson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who died at his Salt Lake City home at the age of 101. Nelson was the oldest leader in the church’s history and had served for more than four decades in top leadership roles.

During his tenure, Nelson oversaw notable changes within the faith, including moving away from the terms “Mormon” and “LDS,” while encouraging a more welcoming tone toward LGBTQ+ individuals, even as the church maintained traditional teachings on marriage. He also faced criticism over the church’s response to sexual abuse allegations.

Church spokesperson Candice Madsen confirmed Nelson’s passing in a statement, noting his long legacy of service and influence.

Authorities are still investigating the Michigan shooting and fire, with additional details expected as the situation develops.
