President Trump announced Saturday that he will deploy troops to Portland, Oregon, to confront what he described as “domestic terrorists,” expanding his strategy of sending federal forces into American cities.

In a social media post, Trump said he was directing the Department of Defense to “provide all necessary Troops to protect war-ravaged Portland” at the request of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, according to the Associated Press. “I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary,” he wrote.

Trump said the move was needed to defend Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, which he claimed were “under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists.”

The decision follows the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, an event that Trump has cited in intensifying his push against what he calls the “radical left.” He has repeatedly blamed left-wing groups for escalating political violence across the country.

Earlier this month, Trump described life in Portland as “like living in hell” and indicated he was considering sending in federal forces, a step he has also threatened in cities such as Chicago and Baltimore. Over the summer, he deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles and ordered a law enforcement buildup in Washington, D.C.

In Tennessee, Memphis officials have been preparing for the arrival of National Guard units. On Friday, Governor Bill Lee, a Republican, confirmed the troops would be part of a broader surge of resources aimed at combating crime in the city.
