Tennis legend Serena Williams stirred controversy this week after posting a video criticizing a cotton plant arrangement displayed in a hotel.

In an Instagram Story shared with her 18.2 million followers, Williams showed a vase containing cotton stalks in what appeared to be a New York City hotel hallway. “Alright, everyone. How do we feel about cotton as decoration?” she asked. “Personally, for me, it doesn’t feel great.”

In a follow-up clip, Williams pulled a piece of cotton from the arrangement, comparing it to “nail polish remover cotton.”

Her remarks quickly drew backlash online. Critics accused her of exaggerating the significance of the display and of ignoring the everyday role cotton plays in clothing, bedding, and household products. One Instagram user wrote, “When cotton triggers you but you’re A-OK with Nike’s sweatshop practices.” Another commented, “This is how screwed up our world is when you’re worrying about a cotton plant in a hotel lobby.”

On X, formerly Twitter, users echoed similar criticisms, with some pointing out the irony that Williams herself benefits from cotton-based products in daily life. Others noted that cotton has been a staple material for thousands of years and is widely used without issue.

The uproar also sparked broader commentary. Some argued that by linking discomfort with a decorative display to the legacy of slavery, Williams diminished the struggles of those facing modern slavery and exploitation worldwide.

Williams, whose net worth is estimated at around $350 million, has not responded further to the criticism.
