President Trump on Thursday quipped that he suggested Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud “take back” Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar after her harsh remarks about conservative leader Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
“I met the head of Somalia, did you know that?” Trump said to reporters in the Oval Office, referring to the country where Omar was born. “And I suggested that maybe he’d like to take her back. And he said, ‘I don’t want her.’”
The remark came after Omar unleashed a series of bitter attacks against Kirk, the 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder who was gunned down at a speaking event in Utah on Sept. 10. Vice President JD Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and other officials in the room appeared amused by Trump’s jab.
Just one day after Kirk’s death, Omar dismissed tributes to the conservative activist and derided his “hateful rhetoric.” Speaking to the progressive outlet Zeteo, she sneered: “There are a lot of people who are talking about him just wanting to have a civil debate. These people are full of s— and it’s important for us to call them out while we feel anger and sadness.”

She doubled down on social media, blasting Democrats and celebrities for “normalizing Kirk” and labeling him a “reprehensible human being” and “stochastic terrorist.” Later, on CNN, Omar said she had no interest in honoring “any legacy this man has left behind,” insisting Kirk’s memory “should be in the dustbin of history.”
South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace attempted to censure Omar for “celebrating murder,” but the resolution narrowly failed when four House Republicans sided with Democrats.
The backlash extended beyond Congress. Golf legend Phil Mickelson slammed Omar’s comments and urged that she be “sent back” to Somalia. “Ilhan spews hate every time she opens her mouth, she came here fraudulently and will hopefully be sent back to Somalia soon,” the three-time Masters champion posted on X.
Mickelson’s remarks came in response to Omar’s latest insult, in which she called Kirk “Dr. Frankenstein” and claimed he “was killed by his monster.” The accused killer, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, has been charged with aggravated murder and other crimes. Authorities described him as a leftist with a transgender partner.
Omar has not publicly addressed the mounting criticism.
