A gunman who opened fire on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) van outside a detention center in Dallas on Wednesday had ammunition marked with anti-ICE messages, according to the FBI.

The shooting, which occurred at an ICE facility in Dallas, left one person dead and two others injured. FBI officials say they are investigating the incident as a targeted act of violence.

“At this point, early evidence indicates that the shooter’s ammunition was marked with messages that were anti-ICE in nature,” said Joe Rothrock, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Dallas Field Office, during a press briefing Wednesday morning. “This is the latest example of a disturbing trend of attacks against law enforcement.”

FBI Director Kash Patel later shared a photo of one of the recovered rounds, which had the phrase “ANTI ICE” etched into its casing.

“One of the unspent shell casings found at the scene was engraved with ‘ANTI ICE,’” Patel wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “More information will be released as the investigation continues.”

Patel condemned the attack, linking it to a broader pattern of violence. “These despicable, politically motivated attacks against law enforcement are not isolated incidents,” he wrote, referencing a recent ambush on another ICE facility in Prairieland, Texas. “This has to stop. The FBI and our partners will ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”

Authorities said the suspected shooter was found dead on a nearby rooftop from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Neither the shooter nor the victims have been publicly identified. No law enforcement officers were injured in the attack.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz also addressed the incident, criticizing rhetoric that demonizes ICE agents.

“When politicians call for ICE agents to be doxed or targeted, it only fuels this kind of political violence,” Cruz said at the press conference. “Violence has no place in our society. It is wrong, and we must stand together against it.”
