Never get between an idiot and his mayo
Hellmann’s vows to pay cafe owner for $11K in repairs after disgruntled customer sets eatery on fire over missing mayo
What the hell, mann?
A Spanish café suffered thousands of dollars in damage after a disgruntled customer, upset over being denied mayonnaise, returned with gasoline and set the place on fire — a bizarre act of arson that has since drawn an unexpected response from mayonnaise brand Hellmann’s.
The incident occurred on August 21 at Cafetería Las Postas in Sevilla. According to the café’s account on Instagram, a man had asked staff for “a couple of packets of mayonnaise” for his sandwich. When told none was available, he angrily left — only to return minutes later with gasoline from a nearby station.
He proceeded to douse the café’s counter with fuel and ignite it, forcing workers and customers — including children — to flee as smoke and flames rapidly filled the space. Surveillance footage captured the chaotic scene.
“Imagine the fire that started,” said café owner José Antonio Caballero, as reported by Euro Weekly News. “There were children in front of him, people spending the afternoon. It was tremendous.”
While no one was injured, the blaze caused an estimated €11,000 (about $11,700) in damage.
The story quickly gained attention, including from Hellmann’s Spain, which offered to pay for the café’s repairs.
“Cafetería Las Postas: We’re sorry we weren’t there,” the company posted on Instagram. “From now on, you can count on us. Let us take care of the repairs — and make sure your sandwiches never run out of mayonnaise again.”
The café responded gratefully: “Thank you so much @hellmanns_spain! It’s a pleasure to receive your help!”
The alleged arsonist was detained at the scene by bystanders and later arrested by police. He reportedly sustained burns during the attack and is currently being held without bail following a court order.
