Outdoor apparel brand Arc’teryx is facing criticism in China after a dramatic dragon-shaped fireworks display in Tibet sparked environmental concerns. The pyrotechnic show, created by acclaimed artist Cai Guo-Qiang, was held last Friday at around 18,000 feet in the Shigatse region to celebrate mountain culture.

While the spectacle aimed to highlight local heritage, it drew sharp criticism on Chinese social media, where users accused the brand of hypocrisy given its conservation-focused image. Many questioned the ecological impact of such a display in a fragile, high-altitude ecosystem and called for a boycott of the brand.

According to NBC News, a local environmental official stated the event used eco-friendly materials and occurred outside protected areas, so it did not require a formal environmental review. The official also claimed there were no signs of damage.

Despite this, Arc’teryx—owned by Chinese sportswear giant Anta—issued an apology, admitting the event was “out of line” with the brand’s values. The company emphasized that biodegradable materials were used but pledged to work with an independent agency to assess any environmental impact.

Cai Guo-Qiang, who also designed the fireworks for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, expressed regret and said he would cooperate with local authorities to evaluate any potential harm and assist in recovery efforts if necessary.
