The network’s decision to suspend the show last week prompted a strong backlash.
ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return to the air on Tuesday, less than a week after the network suspended the show in response to controversial remarks made by host Jimmy Kimmel.
The late-night program was pulled last Wednesday after Kimmel made comments during his Sept. 15 monologue about the political response to the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. ABC initially described the suspension as “indefinite.”
“We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday,” the network said in a statement.
In his monologue, Kimmel criticized what he described as efforts by Trump supporters to politicize Kirk’s death, accusing them of trying to “score political points” by labeling the alleged shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, as a left-wing extremist. He also implied that Robinson may have been ideologically aligned with those making the accusations.
The remarks drew swift backlash. Nexstar Media Group, which owns numerous local television stations nationwide, announced it would preempt the show on its affiliates. In response, Disney, ABC’s parent company, paused production.
