Texas A&M University President Mark A. Welsh III is stepping down following backlash over the firing of a professor who taught a children’s literature lesson that included themes of gender—an issue that drew political criticism and sparked campus unrest.

The resignation was announced Thursday by Texas A&M System Chancellor Glenn Hegar, who said the decision marked “the right moment for change” at one of the country’s largest universities. While Hegar did not directly reference the controversy in his statement, Welsh’s departure comes in the wake of a widely circulated classroom video that showed a student objecting to the lesson. The incident quickly became a flashpoint, drawing condemnation from Republican officials, including Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.

“This transition is necessary to ensure Texas A&M is well positioned for the future—a future that demands bold leadership, continued innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the core values of this university,” Hegar said.

Welsh’s resignation takes effect Friday. The university has not released his resignation letter, nor has Welsh issued a public comment.

The controversy centers on the recent firing of senior English lecturer Melissa McCoul, who had taught at the university for over a decade. Welsh ordered her termination after Republican lawmakers, including Gov. Greg Abbott, called for her dismissal. According to Welsh, McCoul continued teaching material that “did not align with any reasonable expectation of standard curriculum” and deviated from the course’s official description.

McCoul’s attorney, Amanda Reichek, rejected that claim, stating her client’s lessons were “entirely consistent” with the catalog description and that she was never asked to alter her content.

Following McCoul’s removal, Welsh also dismissed the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the head of the English Department from their leadership roles. Chancellor Hegar has since ordered a system-wide audit of course content across all 12 Texas A&M campuses.

The university’s actions have drawn criticism from faculty organizations and free speech advocates, who argue that political pressure is undermining academic freedom.

Lt. Gov. Patrick, who has been vocal in the case, criticized Welsh for siding with the professor. “His ambivalence on the issue and his dismissal of the student’s concerns by immediately taking the side of the professor is unacceptable,” Patrick wrote on X last week.

Welsh had served as Texas A&M’s president since 2023. Prior to that, he was dean of the university’s Bush School of Government and Public Service and had a distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force.
