President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he intends to classify Antifa as a “major terrorist organization” and called for investigations into individuals or entities allegedly funding the group.
“I am pleased to inform our many U.S.A. Patriots that I am designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
He added: “I will also be strongly recommending that those funding ANTIFA be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices.”
Antifa, short for “anti-fascist,” is a loosely affiliated movement whose members often dress in black and have been involved in confrontations at protests. The group lacks a centralized leadership structure and has been associated with clashes with law enforcement and counter-protesters.
Earlier this week, Trump stated he was “100%” in favor of designating Antifa a terrorist group.
The announcement comes amid growing political tension following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last week. Authorities have described the suspect, Tyler Robinson, as having been “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.”
