A growing pack of stray dogs has taken over the streets of Godley, Texas, leaving residents on edge and fearing for the safety of their children. Locals say the feral dogs — many appearing sick and underfed — have become increasingly aggressive and visible during the day, no longer just prowling at night.

Bruce Moats, a concerned father and Godley resident, told NBC 5 that what once seemed like an isolated issue has now escalated into a daily threat. “At this point, we now have dogs — feral dogs, obviously sick, obviously having issues trying to find food — that are out and about at the same time that my children and our children are on the streets,” he said. “The dogs are going to look for food, and I don’t want my children to be that dog food.”

Moats described a recent encounter that left his family shaken. “We’re getting the kids out of the car, we start hearing barking, and then we see dogs running from that corner, running to our house,” he recalled. His wife quickly brought their daughter inside while his son took shelter in their vehicle. Moats said he retrieved his firearm, prepared to defend his family if necessary — though he hopes it won’t come to that.

Residents estimate the pack has grown to as many as 40 dogs. Unsettling footage from recent months shows the animals roaming neighborhoods in broad daylight, suggesting they’ve become increasingly comfortable in the area.

Where the dogs came from remains unclear, but concern is mounting among locals who say the strays are not only a threat to safety but are also in poor health.

Johnson County Commissioner Rick Bailey acknowledged the problem but said the county’s hands are tied. “It is a great concern,” Bailey said. “But I don’t have a solution, nor an answer, other than we are in dialogue with other cities in the county to see if there’s something we can do to mitigate this problem.”

Bailey noted that all local shelters are currently full, and that the county lacks the legal authority to round up the dogs.

In response to the crisis, the Godley City Council is set to review a proposal later this week aimed at cracking down on animal abandonment. The measure would introduce stricter penalties in hopes of curbing the issue at its source.
