FIRED! Marine Recruiter Dismissed Over Post Mocking Charlie Kirk’s Death; More Firings Follow Online Backlash
A U.S. Marine Corps recruiter has been dismissed after a social media post surfaced in which he referred to slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a “racist man” who was “popped.” The post quickly went viral among conservative accounts, sparking outrage and prompting a swift response from military and government officials.
According to USA Today, the Pentagon emphasized a strict “zero tolerance” policy for service members or Defense Department employees who mock or celebrate Kirk’s killing. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the Pentagon is actively monitoring online content related to Kirk’s death and will respond to violations immediately. “Completely unacceptable,” Hegseth wrote, echoing remarks from Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, who also condemned the behavior.
Right-wing influencers, including some with connections to the Trump administration, have led online campaigns demanding the dismissal of military personnel and others who expressed negative sentiments about Kirk. One such incident reportedly involved a teacher in the military school system who called Kirk a “garbage human” on Facebook.
The fallout has extended beyond the military. Political analyst Matthew Dowd was let go from MSNBC after commenting on-air that Kirk had been a “divisive” figure and linking hateful rhetoric to violent outcomes. Dowd responded to his firing on Substack, writing, “I thought to myself how could anyone disagree with this. I guess I was naive.”
Dowd also criticized the network’s response to conservative pressure: “The Right Wing media mob ginned up, went after me on a plethora of platforms, and MSNBC reacted to that mob.” While admitting he feels “down and a bit disheartened,” Dowd said he intends to continue using his voice to advocate for unity and common-sense values.
