A 71-year-old woman is recovering after being severely injured in a dog attack at a rural home near Madisonville, Tennessee, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The attack occurred on Saturday, September 6. Deputies arrived to find the victim, Mary Norwood, lying on the front porch with serious lacerations after being mauled by a group of dogs. Sheriff Tommy Jones said in a news release that witnesses reported 10 to 15 pit bull mixes were involved.
Bystanders intervened to pull the dogs away, likely saving Norwood’s life, officials said. She was treated at the scene and later transported to the University of Tennessee Hospital.
Following an investigation, two men and two women were charged with felony counts of having animals at large resulting in serious injury. Additional charges are pending, including 12 counts of failing to vaccinate dogs for rabies and 26 counts of animal cruelty.
One of the women is also facing charges for introducing contraband into a correctional facility and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Animal control officers seized 27 dogs, including 13 puppies. One of the dogs reportedly belongs to the victim, but authorities have not confirmed whether it participated in the attack.
Madisonville is located roughly 30 miles west of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
