The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the launch of a new federal law enforcement initiative in Chicago on Monday, called Operation Midway Blitz. The operation is part of a broader effort to address criminal activity involving undocumented immigrants in sanctuary cities.
According to a statement released by DHS, the initiative is named in honor of Katie Abraham, who was killed in January in a fatal hit-and-run involving an undocumented immigrant, Julio Cucul-Bol, allegedly driving under the influence.
“DHS is launching Operation Midway Blitz in honor of Katie Abraham,” the agency posted on social media, adding that the operation aims to focus on individuals with criminal records who may have taken refuge in Illinois due to the state’s sanctuary policies.
The statement criticized Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s support for sanctuary city protections, claiming such policies enable undocumented immigrants with criminal backgrounds to avoid federal law enforcement.
“Trump and Secretary Noem stand with the victims of illegal alien crime, while Governor Pritzker stands with criminal illegal aliens,” the statement read.

The announcement follows weeks of heightened violence in Chicago, with reports indicating at least 14 people killed and nearly 100 injured in recent weekend shootings. In response, the Trump administration has reportedly been planning increased federal law enforcement presence in the city, including a potential National Guard deployment.
Reports suggest that up to 200 DHS officers will be sent to Chicago to assist in immigration enforcement actions. Officials have also discussed using the National Guard to deter violent crime and civil unrest.
President Donald Trump drew additional attention over the weekend after sharing a controversial meme on social media. The image depicted him leading National Guard troops in Chicago, labeled “Chipocalypse Now,” with the caption: “I love the smell of deportations in the morning… Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR.”
Governor Pritzker responded to the meme, calling it a dangerous provocation and suggesting it could be interpreted as a threat to take military action against a U.S. city.
