Horse Killed, Child Injured After Pickup Truck Hits Amish Buggy in Upstate New York

Eight members of an Amish community were injured when a pickup truck rear-ended their horse-drawn buggy in Herkimer County, New York, on Monday evening, according to state police.
The collision occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Route 5 in the town of Danube. Police say 73-year-old Laurie Callan was driving a 2012 Dodge pickup when she struck the rear of the buggy, which was carrying eight passengers and pulled by two horses.
The impact caused the buggy to veer off the road, ejecting all occupants. A 6-year-old boy sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Wynn Hospital in Utica, about 30 miles away. Callan’s vehicle overturned during the crash and came to rest in the westbound lane. She was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.
Tragically, one of the horses was killed in the crash and later removed from the scene by its owner. No other serious injuries were reported.
Callan was cited for following too closely, failure to use due care around a horse-drawn vehicle, and driving at an unreasonable speed.
State police say the investigation remains ongoing.
