Vice President Kamala Harris is now being protected by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) following the withdrawal of her Secret Service detail by President Trump, according to a report from FOX 11.

Up to 14 members of the LAPD’s elite Metro Division have been reassigned from other duties, including ongoing investigations and crime suppression operations, to provide security for Harris. FOX 11 also observed an unmarked LAPD vehicle with at least two plainclothes officers stationed outside Harris’ residence in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, where she currently lives with her husband, Doug Emhoff.

President Trump signed an order ending Harris’ Secret Service protection as of September 1. Traditionally, former vice presidents receive security for six months after leaving office, which would have expired on July 21. However, former President Joe Biden quietly extended Harris’ protection for a full year shortly before his term ended on January 20. The reasons for that extension were not publicly disclosed.

Local officials criticized Trump’s decision to end the federal protection. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the move “another act of revenge,” citing it as part of a broader pattern of political retaliation.

“This puts the former Vice President in danger,” Bass said in a statement to FOX 11. “I look forward to working with the Governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has also been offered as an alternative security option. Any use of CHP officers for dignitary protection would require approval from Governor Gavin Newsom. While his office declined to confirm any specific arrangements, a spokesperson stated, “The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.”

Earlier this year, Trump also ended taxpayer-funded security for several figures associated with the Biden administration, including Hunter and Ashley Biden, Dr. Anthony Fauci, former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, former national security adviser John Bolton, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Neither the LAPD nor Harris’ office responded to requests for comment by the time of publication.
