Canadians now have an exciting new reason to explore the great outdoors: a treasure hunt featuring $1 million worth of gold coins hidden across the country. The Great Canadian Treasure Hunt, organized by the Northern Miner trade journal, has planted 217 one-ounce gold coins at secret locations. Alongside the grand prize, there are also 12 smaller caches, each valued at $25,000. Monthly clues will be released to help participants in their search, according to CTV News.
Before you start digging, there are important rules to keep in mind: the treasure is not hidden on private land, inside mines, underwater, on man-made structures, or in dangerous spots requiring special equipment. To keep the contest fair, only one organizer knows the exact locations of the gold.
Central to the hunt is a 52-line poem filled with riddles and cryptic hints about where to find the coins. Participants are encouraged to carefully analyze every word, as the poem includes intentional typos and misleading clues. It references various Canadian landscapes, including the Canadian Shield, and mentions birch, pine, and cedar trees, suggesting the treasure lies in southern forested areas. Water features heavily in the poem as well, with mentions of rivers, lakes, and even coastal “salt air.”
The poem also alludes to minerals like copper and zinc, as well as man-made landmarks, but treasure hunters are warned not to take these clues at face value. The final verses describe a hidden, overgrown location and mention a magnetized case, concluding with a cautionary line: “The compass turns. And all is hush.”
Northern Miner’s chief, Anthony Vaccaro, describes the hunt as “more than a contest—it’s an invitation to explore Canada’s rich mining heritage while challenging your mind.” The treasure hunt runs until December 31, 2026. If no one finds the treasure by then, the prize will be forfeited and remain unclaimed. The contest is open only to Canadian adults. You can check out a promotional video for the hunt online.
